- **Event Description**: In this uniquely designed course, students will explore an exciting exchange between ceramics and glass.About this EventIn this uniquely designed course, students will explore an exciting exchange between ceramics and glass through the slump molding and fusing process. At BKLYN CLAY, students will pinch, sculpt, and carve clay vessels, tiles, and one independent project. These forms will serve a dual purpose by acting as a slump mold for fusing sheet glass. At UrbanGlass students will learn how to cut and assemble sheet glass for melding together in the kiln. This process allows for broad exploration of color, opacity, translucency, and transparency. Glass will be manipulated with gravity and temperature to change the final shape of the object, adding texture and dimension to the composition.Once the glass is slumped into the molds the clay will be glazed to make a separate finished object. This experimental process allows the exciting opportunity to see projects completed in both ceramic and glass! Please note the maximum scale for vessels and independent projects will be 6”x6”x3” and 6”x6”x1.5” and for tiles. What to Expect: This class will be held in two different locations - at BKLYN Clay and at UrbanGlass with the following schedule:Week 1 BKLYN Clay, 535 Carlton Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238Week 2 BKLYN ClayWeek 3 UrbanGlass, 647 Fulton St. Brooklyn, NY 11217Week 4 UrbanGlassWeek 5 BKLYN ClayWeek 6 BKLYN ClayWeek 7 UrbanGlassWeek 8 UrbanGlassAt BKLYN Clay - Unlimited access to clay and glaze materials is included in the registration fee, students will pay $0.4 per cubic inch for bisque and glaze firings.Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.Eligibility: No experience required. "description": "UrbanGlass fosters experimentation and advances the use and critical understanding of glass as a creative medium. The organization provides access to and an education in glass for professional artists, seniors, students, and members of the public of all backgrounds and familiarity with the material. We offer year-round free and low-cost programming through our 17,000 square foot studios, robust class schedule, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, exhibition center, and in-house printed magazine.Founded in 1977 by a group of dedicated artists, UrbanGlass sought to confront the many barriers limiting creative access to glass such as the high costs of real estate, equipment, and the scarcity of technical expertise. From the organization’s conception it served as it does today: As a creative hub and unparalleled resource center for artists, enabling this material to become available for experimentation beyond the confines of factories and universities in New York City for the first time. Today, glass is seen as an integral component of contemporary art’s complex landscape."
